Farewell, Mama Africa

When I was in Mexico in August, a man called after me on the street one day trying to get me to come into his shop.  “Mother Africa!  Mother Africa!”

Well, sadly, the real Mother (Mama) Africa went home in the early, early hours of Sunday morning.

This was the news I woke up to, and it made me so sad.  And then I couldn’t help but smile, remembering the great time I had several years ago in Central Park when she gave a show at Summer Stage.  She was fun and funny and really having a good time with the audience, with the band and, seemingly, with her life in general.  I loved that the audience was all ages: still-in-college hipsters, young parents with toddlers, folks my age and many, many people right up to Makeba’s age.  it was packed and jumping and definitely one of my favorite concert experiences.

We were lucky to know her, and she will be missed.
