A Marvelous Night for a Moondance

Hey, it’s March 1st, the start of Ruth and Stacey’s third annual Slice of Life Story Challenge!  I haven’t posted an official SOL in a long time, and I’ve missed the connection with the slicing gang, so I’m signed up to join the fun this month.  You can join, too.  Post about your day, add your link to the day’s SOLSC comment section over on Two Writing Teachers, and you’re in!  What could be simpler (says the woman who hasn’t managed to post consistently since … I don’t know … last summer sometime)?  So, to get the month started:

_____

Last night as I stood on a Flatbush Avenue corner waiting for the bus, I was a little cranky.  Three days out from last week’s big snow and no one had shoveled that sidewalk.  There was a slippery, packed-down path to walk on and a dangerous-looking mini-mountain of iced snow to walk over to actually reach the bus.

Don’t misunderstand — I love snow.  I even love winter, as much as I don’t love being cold.  But with my bad knee, one fall could put me back on my cane for weeks, and that’s something I definitely don’t love.

As I was trying to figure out how I’d get over the snow mound without injury, I turned and saw the moon.  It’s beautiful tonight, but last night it was spectacular: huge and golden and fullest-full.  A perfect Moonstruck moon.  It cheered me up immediately.

And then the bus came, and one of the men who’d been waiting at the stop helped me over the snow and into the bus — an excellent reminder that I do usually have positive interactions with strangers.

If, by some sad, sad chance, you don’t know where my title comes from … go listen. Now!

  1. I’m sitting here, at 11:59, and was worried you wouldn’t make it in. I know you’re a night owl who never disappoints.
So glad you’re back in and joining us.

    1. Thanks, Stacey! I wasn’t sure I’d make it, either! Just under the wire, as usual. So exciting to see so many people jumping in this year. This should be a fun month.

    1. Thanks, Kimberly. It’s funny. I totally felt as if that moon was all mine, as if no one else could see how wonderful it was … but of course she was smiling on all of us, wasn’t she?!

  2. You took me back to my days living in Park Slope and working in schools in Fort Greene and Prospect Heights. The winter snow -well I loved it, because back home in Australia, it is such a rarity. Thank you for such a strong visual image. Flatbush Avenue, the buses, and that wonderful moon!

    1. One of my favorite songs and artists, too. One of my favorite street-music memories is standing on the uptown 1-train platform at Times Square with my sister, part of a huge crowd that kept letting trains go by so we could stand a little longer and listen to this wonderful musician playing and singing Brown-Eyed Girl (another fave).

  3. I recognized the the title immediately and started smiling. Then I read your post and smiled even more. A lovely slice of your life indeed.

    “Enjoying the moon,
    while waiting for the bus,
    a moment to just chill,
    no worries, no fuss ”

This little jot accompanies a picture I took of Luna last night while I was (guess what?) waiting for the bus to go home. I posted to my facebook. Sometimes this world “makes me wanna holler, throw up both my hands” and sometimes, “I think to myself, what a wonderful world”.

Want to guess what song is playing on my iPod right now?

  4. I miss you too. It seems like many moons since we have spoken. Sometimes life gets in the way. I’m still trying to figure out how to be o.k. with not doing everything I want during the 17 hours that I am awake.

    1. Seems like life is always and all ways getting in the way these days: between me and my sleep time, between me and my lesson-planning time, between me and my be-with-my-family time, between me and my pedicure time … 🙂
