It’s National Poetry Month! I’m looking forward to seeing what fabulousness my poet friends will share this month. And looking forward to seeing what happens with this writing challenge I’ve just given myself. So, to get started, my first official Arun:
You
hold me
tight to you,
your love a vise.
Desperate desire.
I
breathe in,
speak your name,
tell you I’m here —
coax out your comfort,
trust.
We are
only close
with hands open,
bindings loosed, willing.
The form is pretty simple: fifteen lines, each set of five lines starts with one syllable and increases by one (1/2/3/4/5 — 3x). On the train home tonight, I was thinking about rhyme schemes. For the last couple of years, I’ve set my April challenge with rhyming forms (Rhyme Royal, Nove Otto, Zeno). I’m not entirely surprised that something I made up doesn’t have a rhyme scheme (which I just twice typed as “thyme scheme,” which amuses and intrigues me), but now I’m thinking I want one. We’ll see where that goes!
Happy April, everyone!

I’m excited that you’re doing this. I may even give the Arun a whirl myself! One of the things I find please about the form is the tendency for it to make a visual shape with the text, too. So cool!
(By the way, I have been reading your posts lately, but not managing to find words for comments. I may go back and comment…who knows?)

Thanks! I’ve been interested in the line patterns, too … which reminded me of a favorite poem that I may have to write about tonight!
