Long Day’s Journey into … Tears

Had my first crying-on-the-job moment at the new job today. I guess that’s one of the perks of working from home, right? No one had to see it. I could click my camera off during the zoom meeting and just focus on keeping my voice together. And then when we were done, I could just put my head in my hands and sob for a few minutes.

… Not too many minutes, though, because I knew my boss would call to make sure I was okay, and I needed to have a normal, not-sniffly, not-weepy voice for that convo.

Sigh.

Not the first time I’ve realized that my stock-up plan for sheltering in place was deeply flawed in that it didn’t include any wine.

  1. oh, yes. after my first zoom call today I went to collect the rest of a case of wine from the shop around the corner. wish we could share the space and time with it. thinking of you. it’s many things; it’s the rock, it’s the hill, it’s ridiculous laughing, and uncontrollable sobbing and everything and who knows all else what in between. it’s so many people in such grave danger and hope that others at less risk can support and help and know that “all in it together” isn’t entirely accurate. not by far. love to you

  2. I’m sorry it was a rough day. Hopefully tomorrow is better! Thanks for posting a vulnerable slice that helps people feel they are not alone in these new struggles.

  3. I’m sorry you had such a tough time, and sorry I can’t share the wine I have and haven’t even delved into yet myself. I hope whatever caused you sadness/frustration/whatever brought the tears can be worked out. Good luck, and stay healthy. (is there a neighborhood liquor store that will deliver? Cuomo said liquor stores are essential businesses.)

  4. Nothing wrong with a few tears these days – and zoom, for all that it brings us together, makes me sad, too. Wishing I could send you wine. Glad you held it together long enough to get through the call. Tomorrow is a new day… good luck!

  5. It can be tough when things go wrong or emotions are high in your job. I’m glad you were able to cry in your own home – I’ve had a few times of crying behind my desk before the students came back from my lunch. Hopefully tomorrow will be happier

    1. I’m thinking that’s my walk for tomorrow. Up through the park (bonus!) and over to the liquor store … They’ve officially been declared “essential” businesses during our lockdown. 😉

  6. “We all need help to feel fine – let’s have some wine!” Oh man, I’m sorry you’ve had such a day, Stacie. There’s never a good time to have a mini break down, but in the middle of a meeting even one that’s done by remote sucks. Mama said there’d be days like. Go online, find a place that delivers the goods and load up. Even the governor understands it’s essential.

My heart goes out to you, Stacie, and to all who must work to support the rest of us in so many crucial ways, while at the same time sheltering at home. It’s almost too much to ask. Hugs.
