Let’s get in formation …

(Okay yes, I feel a little sheepish using a Beyoncé lyric, but I couldn’t resist.)

We’re past the Ides of March … and I haven’t yet settled on the poetic form I’ll be writing next month. I was thinking about doing another round of aruns. I know the arun is kind of out there now, enough out there that people I don’t know and who don’t read this blog are writing them, which amazes and charms me (because I still can’t really believe that I created a poetic form, because that still just doesn’t seem like a thing that can be possible). I also had the wacky notion of (warning: craziness incoming!) trying to create another form. I think my brain is too tired right now, so making up new forms will have to be the fantasy pursuit of another day.

If I don’t take up the arun again, I need to pick another form. Tonight I spent a little time casting around, looking at different options. Here are several new forms that caught my attention:

Alliterisen: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/alliterisen.html
Constanza: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/constanza.html
ZaniLa Rhyme: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/zanilarhyme.html
Trinet: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/trinet.html
La'ritmo: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/laritmo.html

Triolet: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/triolet.html
Kyrielle: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/kyrielle.html
Palindrome: http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/palindrome.html

Hmm … so the arun has been very much on my mind, but there’s a form on this list that might could be my form for April … It will be a hard one for me, but one of the examples I read really wowed me, made me want to try my hand. Okay, still thinking.

Does one of the forms on this sound interesting to you? What attracts you to that one? Do you think you might give it a try or two during April’s poetry-writing extravaganza?

  1. Well, I like the Kyrielle for several reasons. First of all, it rhymes. a like rhyming poetry. Secondly, I like the fact that each stanza has only four lines. Thirdly, each line has the same number of syllables making it consistent. And lastly, there is no limit to the number of stanzas so if I were only able to come up with just two stanzas on a topic I could stop there and still have a poem that meets all requirements. Of course, that’s just me. Good luck in picking out what will work for you.
